First Of all I would like to inform my readers that I am now going to be writing movie reviews under Movie Addicts Union, each week or alternate week i will be writing review with them, so check them out. let us move to Requiem For a Dream now.
Have You ever heard an advise from your school teachers or probably from your parents -Do Not Do Drugs!. And you just put that aside and never think a lot about it, many in this world are like us actually most of us will not become drug addicts, but to those few who get trapped in the cycle of addiction, the year 2000 Movie Requiem For A Dream is not a movie, it is their life filmed and shown on a big screen and for those people the movie helped in therapy. And i Don’t know about others but after sitting through the movie two times, I never plan to take any drugs.
The Director Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream stars Jared Leto, Ellen Burstyn and Jennifer Connelly. The Movie follows Sara Goldfarb(Ellen) a lonely old widow, her son Harry (Jared) , his girlfriend Marion(Jennifer) and his drug dealer friend Tyrone(Played by Marlon Wayans). After getting to know that She is going to be on TV, Sara decides to lose some weight and she gets hooked up to Weight reducing pills, meanwhile her son harry and his girlfriend and friend are having their own troubles with Heroin and cocaine. And thus follows the most terrifying and steep descent of characters on movies, we witness the characters losing power, losing emotions, losing love and at last losing their hope.
If it was for me i would strap down anyone having ideas to take drugs and tie him/her to a chair and then make him/her watch this movie again, again and again and witness him/her descend spiraling down to depression. It was too dark wasn’t it, But seriously, if one word would describe me after watching this it would be Depressed, It is difficult for me to accept it but as the credits rolled in, i had tears rolling down my cheeks, I was not crying, I was just shedding tears, i was sad for Sara, I was sad for Harry and Marion But most of all I was sad for Humanity, The movie makes you think what are we doing to the society?
As i stated in my last review that it is easy to love a movie, but its awfully difficult to love this masterpiece. Because you cannot watch this movie many times and after watching it you may wish for deleting it from your brain. Darren Aronnofsky’s direction is great, with perfect camera handling and cinematography, the use of small cuts and shaky cams is brilliant, but what outshines is the use of Time Lapse photography to show the passing of time inside a room and as Sara walks in the street. It is near to perfect and grips the viewer more passionately.
In the end there is only one character who is happy, she has drugs in her hand with an expression of utter bliss. But is that really happiness, what about the cost of achieving it? Was it all worth it? Prostitution, losing hope, losing all money, losing dream to be a fashion designer. Is that giddiness permanent? No its not. Director Darren Arfonsky clearly shows that the feeling of bliss and carefree attitude after taking drug is non existant, it is temporary. The real world is still going like that. The problems never leave, you just forget about them.
How can I talk about this movie without talking about one of the best acting I have seen throughout my small life? Ellen Burstyn was great in The Exorcist, her acting was flawless in it, but boy she outshines it in this movie. She deserved that Oscar that year, while not going to detail about the problems with Oscar Snubs, Her portrayal of Ellen Burstyn was one of the most powerful weapon the movie had and she is one deadly weapon. Her character’s transformation was utterly terrifying to watch and not to forget those hallucinations with refrigerator and television. In one of the most emotional scenes of the movie she has a monologue in which she talks about how lonely she is and how becoming old affected her to her Son Harry, the scene is so well acted that anyone would get goosebumps watching her act
Trivia : During Ellen Burstyn’s impassioned monologue about how it feels to be old, cinematographer Matthew Libatique accidentally let the camera drift off-target. When director Darren Aronofsky called “cut” and confronted him about it, he realized the reason Libatique had let the camera drift was because he had been crying during the take and fogged up the camera’s eyepiece. This was the take used in the final print.
Now that is what i call acting, this kind of acting is getting less now, with robotic and idiotic characters in movies. This may well be one of the best acted characters in the history of cinema way up with Jack Nicholson and Charlie Chaplin.
Other actors also did justice to the characters Jared Leto was famous for this movie before getting role for The Joker in Suicide Squad. The last scene had such a power that it can shake anyone to his or her core, as all the characters crawl in to fetal position the most vulnerable position of a being, you would also wish to join them in that position.
Even if you haven’t watched the movie , you must have heard its music, because Lux Aeterna from Requiem for a Dream is probably most repeated music in the world. The music have been used many times for many tv shows, infinite number of videos on youtube , multiple movie trailers (like Lord of the Rings Two Towers, I am Legend, Lost, Da Vinci Code, Sunshine ,etc.) and much more montages. It is also used in game show called Got Talent of various countries.
While for many this music is one of the most epic thing they have heard, this may well be quite awesome, but for those who have witnessed the movie, its difficult to explain.
The Movie is highly graphic and has nudity which makes it hard to watch over all this, the movie is tense and terrifying at some parts, so viewer discretion is advised.
Sometimes You take a step, you do something that your regret doing later but also feel good to have done it. You get that feeling while watching Requiem for a Dream, The director’s gritty and gory attempt is terrifying because it is too close to reality, and its disturbing because it shows true despair.
World Cinema needs to have more movies like this, the movie had a purpose and it hits hard at its points. The Movie will definitely get 10/10 from me.
